Objectives:
By the end of this session participants will be able to:
Identify a benefit of providing practice data reports.
Have identified a way to translate the strategy to their context.
The Problem:
Decades of clinical reasoning research have focused on describing the cognitive processes of a single clinician identifying a diagnosis. Yet, clinical reasoning is recognized as a more complex process that includes decisions for ordering tests, patient management, capacity for error identification and correction. It is time to focus on a systems wide approach to the continued development of practicing clinicians in order to have the biggest impact on patient safety. In this workshop we introduce an evidence-based quality improvement approach to improving clinical reasoning in practice.
Our Approach:
In practice learning outcomes can be strengthened with timely coaching and feedback. One approach to providing feedback to clinicians is through the collection of practice data. However, evidence suggests that the nature and quality of feedback has a strong influence on overall perceived effectiveness and value.Â
