Presenter:
Jay Carter
on behalf of Beth Levinson
Objectives:
By the end of this session participants will be able to:
Define McMaster’s six principles of community engagement.
Apply the Principles of Community Engagement within community engaged academic work.
Identify and implement different types of experiential- and community-engaged education tools.
The Problem:
Experiential and community-engaged education are becoming increasingly utilized as methods of transformative teaching and learning. In practice, however, building navigating the complex relationships of different stakeholders while identifying how to best support student learning in a holistic way can be a challenge.
Our Approach:
The Office of Community Engagement has co-developed Principles of Community engagement with on- and off-campus community experts and partners to help guide our collaboration with others; whether this is in the classroom, in a research setting, or in co-curricular activities.
Instructional Methods:
This workshop will begin by an overview of the role of the Office of Community Engagement, followed by a discussion of the six principles and an interactive case study. A brief discussion on the different types of experiential education and community-engaged education will be provided as well.
