Workshop Abstract
Anti-Racism for Leaders:Â
A Narrative Approach
💻 Delivered Virtually
📅May 25, 2021
Presenters:
Saroo Sharda
Javeed Sukhera
Objectives:
By the end of this session participants will be able to:
Describe how a model for bias recognition and management may be applied to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Provide examples of how bias recognition and management can contribute to structural change within organizations and society at large. Â
The Problem:
Although equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) has become a strategic priority in medical education, efforts to advance social justice through educational interventions face several barriers. For example, any educational interventions that seek to improve equity often involve sensitive topics related to EDI that provoke emotional and defensive reactions. In addition advancing equity and justice requires critical reflection about our personal and professional identities, as well as the systems in which we learn and work.
Our Approach:
Using a unique combination of narrative medicine and creative writing methods, participants will engage in self-reflection about their professional and personal identities and how this relates to EDI efforts, personally and institutionally.
Instructional Methods:
A combination of short, didactic teaching and interactive narrative medicine methodology, in which participants will have the opportunity to be both story teller and story listener. Safe space and confidentiality will be paramount - both facilitators are experienced and expert in creating these spaces.
