The transition to online education has provided you with many new considerations. How do you translate in-person interactions into online ones? Which platforms can you use? What can be synchronous or asynchronous?Â
Join us for this special event co-sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine and the Program for Faculty Development. While DFM members have been given priority access to register for this event, all members of the FHS community are welcome on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Teresa Chan (Assistant Dean, Program for Faculty Development), Yusuf Yilmaz (Postdoctoral Fellow, Office of Continuing Professional Development), and Ilana Bayer (Director, Learning Technologies Lab), and presented a virtual event to help you consider how they might match their learners' needs to the best online platforms.Â
Learning Objectives
At the end of this virtual event, participants will be able to:
Articulate a framework for auditing your online learning environments to see if there are any missing gaps;
Describe good practices for teaching synchronously and asynchronously;
Identify tools and resources for teaching online.

The American Medical Association: Through an agreement between The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and The American Medical Association, Physicians may convert Royal College MOC credits to AMA PRA Category 1 Creditsâ„¢. Facilitator + Speaker
Dr. Teresa Chan (@TChanMD) is an associate professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine at McMaster University. She is the assistant dean for McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences Program for Faculty Development (@MacPFD). She is an avid scholar in health professions education and works with the MERIT group (@MERIT_McMaster), and conducts research and scholarship within this area.Â
Dr. Yusuf Yilmaz (@YusufYilmazPhD) is a postdoctoral fellow at McMaster University. He is situated within the McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences Program for Faculty Development (@MacPFD), MERIT (@MERIT_McMaster), and the McMaster Department of Medicine (@MacDeptMed). He is an avid scholar in health professions education, and conducts research and scholarship within education technology.Â
Ilana Bayer (@IlanaBayer) is Director of Learning Technologies as well as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology & Molecular Medicine. Dr. Bayer has worked in the corporate sector developing educational and performance-based training materials. She has a combined background in health sciences, e-learning, teaching and training. In her role, Dr. Bayer assists faculty with all learning technology needs and, specifically, supports faculty development around the use of electronic modalities to enhance teaching.
Sarrah Lal , MBA (@SarrahML) is an assistant professor in the Division of Education & Innovation (DEI) within the Department of Medicine. She is a entrepreneurship and innovation expert and directs various educational efforts within the Michael G. DeGroote Initiative for Innovation in Healthcare. Currently she is also the lead of the Leadership & Management team in the McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences Program for Faculty Development (@MacPFD).
Dr. X. Catherine Tong (@XC_TongMD) is an Assistant Clinical Professor affiliated with the Dept of Family Medicine at McMaster University. She currently practices emergency medicine at the Grand River and St. Mary’s General Hospitals in Kitchener-Waterloo, and family medicine at the Grand Valley Institute for Women, a federal correctional facility in Kitchener. She is the faculty development lead at Waterloo Regional Campus. Her education research focuses on engaging community-based faculty members in the Distributive Medical Education context through curating and delivering faculty development content that is valuable and accessible to busy clinicians.Â
